Welcome to Diversity in YA Fiction!

Welcome to Diversity in YA Fiction!

Earlier this year, Malinda Lo and I discovered that we’ll both have Asian-inspired young adult fantasies releasing around the same time in April 2011 (Malinda’s Huntress and my Fury of the Phoenix). We decided this was a wonderful excuse to have a celebration!

After lots of brainstorming, we decided that we would join forces to do a four-city tour in May 2011. But we also decided to invite other authors, who have backgrounds or wrote diverse characters in their middle grade or young adult novels, to join us. Their response was enthusiastic, and we are so excited for this tour! We hope you are as well!

Right now we’re in the middle of lining up locations for our tour, and in the meantime, we wanted to launch this website to spread the news about the tour. As soon as our authors and locations are finalized, we’ll announce it right here.

Leading up to our tour, we’ll be inviting guest posts from authors, featuring books that include diversity, and encouraging all readers of YA fiction to read widely — and read a lot! So if you’d like to be the first to get the news about our tour locations and who will be joining us (we can promise some truly fabulous writers), just sign up for our mailing list and we’ll keep you up to date. (Plus, there may be some swag involved.)

And please do help spread the word! We are an entirely grassroots, labor-of-love, DIY tour, and we can’t wait to get to know you.

  1. Why am I just now discovering this site??? I swear I’m so out of it sometimes :p Anyway, I love the idea, have a fabulous tour :)

I wish you ladies were coming to Chicago!!

  2. Hi Malinda and Cindy. I am looking forward to your tour. I’ve been in my middle school library for 3 yrs., and am all about getting Diversity in it and teaching students and teachers to look beyond their four walls. I have your books, and am glad there are forthcoming sequels to them. I also look forward to your new picture book, Cindy. Keep the Diversity books coming, cos I’m gonna need it! (PS – I’m psyched to see those “mystery” authors too.)
